Chapter Fourteen

There were at five people slumped over against the wall, masks removed and tossed on their laps. These were bodies of the enemy that had been collected from the house.

Timur looked over them, rubbing his hands together and muttering something in Russian.

I looked at them in horror. They were all dead, with bullet wounds in different parts of their body. Most of the holes were in their torsos, thank god, because I didn’t think I could handle seeing a head blown open. What I saw now was already almost too much for me to stomach.

“They were foolish to come here so unprepared,” Timur said, shaking his head at the bodies in front of him.

A guard dragged another body to add to the lineup, propping it against the wall and pulling the mask off the man’s head.

“How were they unprepared?” I asked.

“No vests to stop the bullets, and they came in the middle of the day. Even though they caught us off guard, we only lost one or two men,” he explained. “They were amateurs.”

“Well, they certainly scared me,” I said, trying hard to take my eyes away from the corpses.

Timur chuckled. “I take it you haven’t seen anything like this before.”

I shook my head.

“Well, we will keep you away from this the best that we can, but sometimes things don’t go as planned. At least you know where the bunker is now,” he said.

I looked up at him as he gazed thoughtfully at the bodies. “You’re not going to move? Aren’t we in more danger now that they know where we are?”

Timur shook his head. “We don’t run from the enemy. All I need is more guards, and we will be safe.”

“Are you sure?” I asked, doubtful that more guards were all it would take to stop another hit.

Timur shrugged. “Judging by who they sent, I doubt they will be trying this again any time soon. They don’t have the resources for that.”

That made some sense, but it didn’t make me feel any less uneasy about staying here after the attack. I would never feel safe, even with more men guarding the place. What if one of them went rogue and shot me while I slept? Anything could happen.

“So, you’re not scared to get shot?” I asked.

Timur tapped his suit jacket with a thick finger. It made an odd sound, as though it were made from thick plastic instead of cotton or silk. “I have armor on,” he stated. “It protects from most types of bullets, except for the really big ones.”

“What if someone shoots your head?”

“Then it explodes,” Timur said, laughing at the thought.

I didn’t think it was that funny. How could he laugh at the thought of his own head exploding from a gunshot to his skull? There must have been a screw loose in his head. Any normal person would be terrified to die that way.

“So, you’re no scared,” I said.

“I never am,” Timur said with a smirk. “That’s how they get you. To be scared is to be a loser.
